What is the role of claims adjusters?
The claims adjuster helps the insured person navigate the claims process. Investigating, assessing, and negotiating are the three key functions of this certified professional.
The claims adjuster is the point of contact in charge of the case. They are there to keep the insured person informed, and their role specifically involves:
- Investigating the causes of the loss.
- Verify the coverage included in the insurance policy.
- Review the police report and other relevant documents, such as the inventory of damaged or stolen property.
- Take the statement from the claimant and any witnesses.
- Assess the damages and losses incurred to proceed with the claim settlement.
The claims adjuster also explains the detailed procedure and the services that will be provided, including:
- emergency measures to be taken.
- how to identify individuals responsible for these emergency measures.
- the steps they intend to take regarding the damaged property.
- authorization to purchase replacement property.
- the application of living expenses or business interruption losses, in the case of a business.
- how the settlement amount will be estimated (calculation bases, depreciation methods, etc.).
- the timeline for settlement.
Who certifies claims adjusters?
They are certified by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) and regulated by the Chambre d’assurance de dommage (ChAD).
